Wombats comments on Beijing:
1 = bad 10 =good

Based on a stay in the Hutong section:

  • Atmosphere: 8 out of 10
  • Accommodation where we stayed: 7 out of 10
  • Ease of using local transport 6 out of 10
  • General area cleanliness: 5 out of 10
  • Locals friendliness: 9 out of 10
  • Ability to be understood by locals: 6 out of 10 (Fair)
  • Foods varieties: 8 out of 10
  • Restaurants and eateries: 7 out of 10

Comments: Public transport is a little difficult but we did manage buses which are only 2y to go any distance. The foods here are very good with a good variety of restaurants and stalls in the food markets. The metro is good. However as with other Chinese cities the officials do not have much respect for the peoples bodies and the metro although efficient has hundreds of steps and hardly any escalators.

 Population

According to the result of the Fifth National Census by November 1, 2005, the total population of Beijing is approximately 15.38 million, much more than 3 million of which are non-native people.

 Area

The total area of the whole city is about 16,807.8 square kilometers (6,489.5 square miles), 62% of which is the mountainous region covering an area of 10,418 square kilometers (4,022 square miles), while 38% is the plain which is about 6,390 square kilometers (2,467 square miles).

 Landform

The high northwest and low southeast make up the whole of Beijing’s terrain. Its west is the Mt. Taihang and the north is the Mt. Yanshan. Between these two mountains is the Nankouguan Ditch. Together they form a semicircular ridge curving to the southeast and giving rise to the popular name ‘Curved Beijing’. On the whole, its topography is remarkable for its grandeur.
